what's wrong?

Hello,

I am very new to Tig welding. I just purchased a Lincoln Square Wave 200. It came defective out of the box, flashed 100 and nothing could be adjusted. Long story short, Lincoln tech had me remove the cover and I found that the retaining clip for the wiring ribbon on the back of the display circuit board was broken and the connector was half way out. I pushed it back in and the display now functions.

So, now I am worried that the unit is a dud. I tried to run a bead on a razor blade with 1/16 tungsten at the lowest possible setting and it just burned through it. None of the welds look clean on the thicker stuff (I am not using any filler, just practicing control and fusion welding). The tungsten gets trashed quickly and the arc wonders all over the place, the pulse function (set at 1) is barely noticeable. There are a lot of sparks when welding steel. When I set the unit to AC welding for some aluminum (120 amps, Freq 120, Balance 75) it just torched the aluminum (see pic) black and pitted.

At this point, since I am so new to Tig welding, I am probably going to return the unit and get another one since it is broken inside anyway (retaining clip is snapped off). However, I am sure some of the above is my fault due to lack of skill, but it just seems to me that if I am welding on 16ga steel that I should be able to get a clean weld going without burning holes in it at 40 amps on the peddle.

Would love to get set in the right direction if anyone has some tips.

Thanks

First pictures don't work on here.

I would return it and get a new one, but that's not going to fix the trouble with your welds.

    1 - Not using 100% argon
2 - Torch in the positive port
    3 - not getting gas

You have to post photos from an online host site like photobucket.

The attachment button does not work..

    Yeah,

Paul, you can also post photos or graphics to your Facebook newsfeed, then just click on it, which will generate a URL link to copy and paste onto the forum here so people can see your pictures.

    Like this: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=525402740863881&set=a.438701346200688.97994.100001824784929&type=3&theater

Otherwise, I noticed at WeldingWeb that you've discovered that your problem was caused due to your using C25 rather than 100% Argon.

So, there seems to be some closure to this topic.

I think about 10% of the people that post they are having some kind of trouble, come back to see if they get any feedback or never come back at all.

    Yeah,

A new poster can get more action at WeldingWeb, and some new posters here and elsewhere may be in such a hurry to solve their problem that they'll post on a few forums until their solution is arrived at (which I don't really blame them), and then may never return to the forums and give the closure to the thread. That's why I thought to do it, because I noticed it resolved at WeldingWeb. I'm sure you've noticed that kind of thing a lot too, George.

But this forum is kind of a crippled one, with no functional photo posting ability. I mean, the Everlast Forum is now working quite well, but there's not much interaction there yet, undoubtedly due to it having problems for so long. And so, WeldingWeb seems to catch most everything welding wise, like flypaper...

Yea, I would think Mr Tig would want to keep his site in tip top shape but he don't even post on here any longer.

I think it may be a money thing, to keep a forum in top working order and he don't want to put a lot into it.

    Right,

Maybe he'd do us a favor by closing this forum.

I mean, in it's crippled form it doesn't effectively serve as an alternative to Welding Web, not that Welding Web is bad, but there are some who would undoubtedly prefer a tamer forum. And as you know, I like to mix it up a bit over there on WeldingWeb, but, ideally, an alternative, without as much bi-polarity will have a good place on the internet too, like how this forum and the members are.

So, maybe killing this forum would give rise to a new, fully-functioning forum somehow.

Otherwise, the Everlast Forum is nice too, since I'm an Everlast users and a fan.

Just need more people to get involved in this forum.

Try to keep the place respectful to each other and a place to learn and hang out.

Not sure why you guys still insist on posting from your computers.

A new website is supposedly in the works.. not sure on launch date though.

If you want to post photos you just have to host them at a free photo site.. then you can post all the photos here you want..
